Fernandina Beach, is the incorporated City on Amelia Island, encompassing much of the middle to northern end of the island. Homes in Fernandina Beach range from pocket communities, tree lined streets to new ocean view homes on the north end of the island, backing up to fabulous views of the ocean and Ft. Clinch to the west, as well as older cottages built in the early 1900’s when the north end was the only true beach community.
The area was first inhabited by the Timucuan Indian tribe and later became known as the “Isle of 8 Flags” because Fernandina has had the flags of the following nations flown over it since 1562: France, Spain, Great Britain, Spain (again), the Patriots of Amelia Island, the Green Cross of Florida, Mexico, the Confederate States of America, and the United States. It is the only municipality in the United States that has flown eight different national flags and to say it is rich in history would be an understatement.
